Top Rank for Denmark and a Gold Label for Odenses Startup Ecosystem

Startup Genome has published this year’s Global Startup Ecosystem report and it is the world’s most exhaustive research on startup companies. It includes more than 280 entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems, with over 3 million startups analyzed every year.We are very proud to announce, that Denmark is no. 31 on the list.

At Invest in Odense, we are putting a lot of work into supporting and developing the startup environment in our city, and that is why we are so happy about this news. We want startups to get the help they need, and for them to reach their full potential. The City of Odense has the last decade seen the rise of a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. Strong local private startup hubs and coworking spaces are supported by dedicated government initiatives.

Top Robotic Hub

In the report, Odense is also pointed out as: “(…) one of the top robotics hubs in Europe, hosting 175 startups and scaleups, 40 higher education programs, and 10 research institutes. Robotics cluster Odense Robotics achieved the EU-certified Gold Label for Cluster Management Excellence”. It’s no wonder then, that Odense is mentioned as a major robotic hub. The robotics ecosystem in Odense consists of a big national cluster, multiple education programs, and a great startup environment. That’s some of the reasons why we have more than 130 robot companies in Odense and over 4600 employees in the robotics industry on Funen, and why over EUR 900 million is invested in Odense Robotics companies since 2015.

World-Class Ecosystem

Invest in Odense is collaborating with international and local companies, knowledge institutions and the government, which makes the ecosystem in Odense unique and strong. We have a strong collaboration with Odense Robotics Startup Hub and PreFlight Odense, which both offer accelerator programs for ambitious startups. Odense Robotics Startup Hub is an accelerator program for headwear-producing companies within robotics and automations, and is recognized as one of the best robotics incubators in Europe, with over 80% survival rate. PreFlight Odense attracts all kinds of entrepreneurs, who are looking to scale globally. According to the report, one of the reasons to move your startup to Denmark is; “A tight-knit startup ecosystem that is easy to tap into, with numerous platforms that assist startups looking to enter the Danish market and soften the transition”, which just underlines why Odense is a good place to start.

Being placed as no. 31 is something we are very proud of. It is a great honor for us, to be placed so high on a list about startups and development. Helping startups is something we put a lot of work into, so this is just a recognition we are very happy about”, says Joost Nijhoff, head of Economic Growth & Tourism at City in Odense.

The report also shows that Denmark is in the top 10 in both Performance and Talent & Experience, and in the top 15 in Funding. In Total Early Stage Funding, the global average is £671,5 million, but Denmark is above that with around EUR 904 million and in Ecosystem Value, the global average is EUR 28 billion whereas Denmark has EUR 37 billion.
