Revolutionizing water pipelines: Odense’s Robsub secures investment

Mar 19, 2025 | Articles, cases, News, Robotics and Drones

RobSub, a robotics startup from Odense, has secured DKK 6.7 million to develop a robot that will autonomously assemble water pipelines, reducing excavation, soil removal, and improving worker safety. Backed by major Danish water utilities, the project could create high-tech jobs and further establish Odense as a leader in sustainable technology.

Robot will revolutionize water pipeline installation

Founded in 2022 by industry veterans, including Esben Østergaard, the founder of Universal Robots, and serial investor Peter Smedegaard, RobSub is a new robotics company from Odense with big ambitions. Despite being a relatively young player in the robotics field, the company has already made waves with its innovative approach to water pipeline installation.

We aim to enhance safety and sustainability by reducing physical strain on workers and protecting the environment.

RobSub has recently secured DKK 6.7 million in funding to develop a groundbreaking robot that could revolutionize the way water pipelines are installed. This autonomous robot will be capable of assembling pipes in deep trenches, reducing the need for large excavations, cutting down on soil removal, and most importantly, improving safety for employees working in hazardous conditions.

The project is supported by three major Danish water utilities – Hofor, Vandcenter Syd in Odense, and Aarhus Vand – and will unfold over the next two years. RobSub has already developed a working prototype, though the details remain under wraps for now.

“At Robsub, we understand that collaboration with the right partners is essential to the success of our innovative technology. Our ability to test and refine our robot in real-world conditions, alongside industry leaders is a critical step toward ensuring this game-changing solution becomes a reality. This partnership is key to unlocking the potential of our robot and shaping the future of pipeline installation.

Paving the way for Odense’s future in sustainable robotics

Robsub’s groundbreaking project has the potential to not only transform the water infrastructure sector but also play a pivotal role in shaping Odense’s growing robotics industry. The development of an autonomous robot that can install water pipelines with minimal excavation will have lasting effects on efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. As Robsub continues to refine its technology, the company’s success could lead to the creation of new high-tech jobs and attract further investments to the region.

This project further solidifies Odense’s position as a leader in sustainable technology and automation. By advancing robotics in the water supply industry, Robsub is helping to enhance the city’s reputation as a forward-thinking hub for innovative and eco-friendly solutions, positioning Odense at the forefront of global advancements in infrastructure development.
