With a fresh injection of 14 million DKK UCL University College is set to transform Denmark’s life science sector by placing Odense firmly on the map as the nation’s innovation powerhouse. As the coordinating hub for a nationwide upskilling initiative, Odense is not just supporting local life science and welfare technology companies but also sending a clear signal to international investors: this is where the future of life science is being shaped.

Competence Development to Drive Innovation and Growth

The initiative Erhvervsfyrtårn Life Science – Competence Supply in Life Science SMEs, aims to strengthen competencies in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Life Science and welfare technology.

With a total grant of DKK 14 million and a project period from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028, the initiative will accelerate upskilling of employees through practice-oriented academy and diploma modules, flexible micro-credentials, and recognition of prior learning assessments. The goal is to increase the number of employees with higher education and strengthen companies’ ability to manage green and digital transitions.

The Life Science sector is developing rapidly, and companies need the right competencies among their employees. With this project, we can offer tailored programs from Odense that meet companies’ needs and support innovation and growth across the sector,

Poul Skov Dahl

Director of Competence and Organisational Development, UCL

A nationwide initiative

While the project has national reach, Odense is the hub for coordination. The project is carried out in cooperation with UCN University College, Absalon University College, and the Danish Life Science Cluster, ensuring both nationwide impact and strong local presence.

The initiatives include, among other things:

  • Screening of competence needs and development of individual education plans
  • Mentoring schemes and study-preparation activities
  • Development of new industry-oriented courses, including in medicinal chemistry and quality assurance

The project is based on a documented need for qualified labor in the Life Science sector, where many employees lack formal higher education. It addresses this challenge and contributes to creating a future-proof competence infrastructure in Denmark.

Boosting Competencies in Denmark’s Life Science SMEs

We see great potential for growth in the Life Science ecosystem. When UCL enables employees without a Life Science background to gain targeted knowledge, we are not only creating a competence boost – we are lowering barriers for upskilling across different educational backgrounds, thereby strengthening the entire value chain,

Ann Zahle

Chairperson, Life Science Fyn

This ambition is shared by companies in the sector:

We see great potential for growth in the Life Science ecosystem. When UCL enables employees without a Life Science background to gain targeted knowledge, we are not only creating a competence boost – we are lowering barriers for upskilling across different educational backgrounds, thereby strengthening the entire value chain,

John Veje Olesen

CEO, KEN Hygiene Systems

Through this project, SMEs in the Life Science sector gain a unique opportunity to invest in their employees’ competencies. It is an initiative that not only addresses current challenges but also creates long-term competitiveness.

Odense: A Strategic Location for Investment

Odense offers a strong ecosystem for Life Science and welfare technology, combining skilled talent, educational institutions, and close industry collaboration. For investors, the city provides a unique environment where innovation, competence development, and business growth come together. Projects like the UCL-led Life Science initiative further strengthen Odense’s position as an attractive location for companies looking to invest in Denmark’s growing Life Science sector.

Investors look for regions where talent, industry, and innovation come together. Odense delivers exactly that. By leading competence development projects like this, the city strengthens its position as a hub for Life Science investment,
