Odense-based Vertanical secures German approval, opening access to Europe’s largest healthcare market
Vertanical’s cannabis-based pain treatment Exilby® has received marketing authorization in Germany, marking an important milestone for both the company and Funen’s growing medical cannabis ecosystem. The approval highlights how research, production capabilities, and industry collaboration help bring new treatments to patients across Europe.
A major milestone for Vertanical
Beyond the regulatory approval itself, market authorization in Germany represents a major commercial breakthrough. As Europe’s largest healthcare market, Germany provides access to a substantial patient population and creates a strong foundation for future international expansion. The milestone demonstrates how innovation developed on Funen can progress from research and clinical development to commercialization in leading European markets.
Exilby® is scheduled for launch in Germany and Austria on 1 September 2026 and has been approved as a conventional medicinal product containing cannabis-derived ingredients.

Strengthening a growing industry on Funen
The approval is not only a milestone for Vertanical. It also highlights the development of a growing medical cannabis industry on Funen.
Today, the industry consists of four companies. Three production companies and one analytical laboratory, employing a total of 212 people. Together, they export medical cannabis products to nine countries and contribute to strengthening the region’s life science profile.
Since 2018, Denmark has allowed the production and export of medical cannabis. During the same period, the University of Southern Denmark became the first university in Denmark approved to work with the cannabis plant and has collaborated with several Danish producers.
